In Polish, "Where is the bathroom?" is Gdzie jest toaleta? |
Let's look at the components. |
The first two words, gdzie jest, mean "where is." This is followed by toaleta. |
So to recap, we have Gdzie jest toaleta? |
This literally means "Where is the toilet?" |
We can make this phrase more formal by adding "Excuse me," which in Polish is przepraszam. |
So the whole phrase is Przepraszam, gdzie jest toaleta? |
In Poland, there are not that many public toilets. If there are, they are usually in very bad shape and not free. Look for the signs that say WC, pronounced [wu-ce] or Toaleta. You can also try using the toilet in a café or a restaurant, but if you are not a customer, you will have to pay for it. |
When you finally get to the bathroom, there may be one last problem: How to know which bathroom is for men and which is for women. We usually have signs on the bathroom door. For women, this could be a figure of a girl or a circle. |
They may also use the word Damska, meaning "feminine." For men, you might find a figure of a boy or an inverted triangle. |
They can also use the word Męska, English for "masculine." Please bear in mind that sometimes there is just one toilet for everybody, so you won't see any signs except Toaleta. |
