Lesson focus

Now let's go over how to answer the question "How many people in your party?" in Polish. |
In Polish, you would respond by giving the waiter or waitress the number of people you're with. |
So for example, let's say there are three of you. |
In Polish, this would be trzy. Now we're going to review some numbers in Polish in case your party happens to be bigger. |
The numbers one through five are jeden, dwa, trzy, cztery, and pięć. If there are four of you, you will simply say the number "four" (Cztery). |
However, the nouns in Polish have genders, so the forms of jeden ("one") and dwa ("two") change depending on the gender of the noun they refer to. Since the gender of osoba ("person") is feminine, the numbers jeden and dwa will become jedna and dwie. |
Therefore, if there are two of you, your response will be dwie ("two"). |
If you are by yourself, the proper answer to the question would be Tylko ja. |
In English, this means "Just me." |
The first word, tylko, means "just" or "only." |
The second word, ja, means "I." |
