Lesson Transcript

Hello everybody. My name is Marzena. Welcome to Top Polish Words. Today, we’ll learn 10 Must Know Math Words.
So obviously, number one is,
1. Matematyka “math”
Or actually if you want to say it shorter in a kind of slang, student slang, you will say instead of matematyka, you will say, matma. That’s a short slang for matematyka or math. And of course, you can say, for example,
Matematyka jest matką wszystkich nauk. “Mathematics is the mother of all sciences.” Which is true.
Matematyka jest matką wszystkich nauk.
2. Liczba “number”
We also need a “number” and “number” in Polish, it’s liczba.
For example, the first one that comes to my mind, it’s liczba pierwsze, or in plural form, liczby pierwsze, which means, “prime numbers.” Liczby pierwsze.
For example, you can say,
Liczby pierwsze są bardzo ważne. “Prime numbers are very important.”
Liczby pierwsze są bardzo ważne.
I mean, that’s true, that’s how our word is working right now, right? All the passwords and stuff. Liczby pierwsze są bardzo ważne.
3. Pół “half”
And in Polish, we say, pół or you can say, połówka, depends on which meaning you want to use it.
So for example, you can say,
Dwie i pół godziny czekałem. “I was waiting two and a half hours.”
Dwie i pół godziny czekałem.
4. Procent “percent”
Another one and this one is very similar to English. It’s “percent” and “percent” in Polish is just procent. So just a small tiny little change, percent, procent.
So for example, you can say,
Ile to jest procent? “What percent is that?”
5. Parzyste “even”
Next comes two very nice ones and kind of related. Let’s start with the first.
“Even” like even numbers. “Even” in Polish, is parzyste, actually, parzysty, if you want to say it in singular form but we never use it in singular form. So we say,
liczby parzyste, remember, number was liczba; liczby parzyste which means, “even numbers.”
And for example, you can say,
Liczby parzyste dzielą się przez dwa. “Even numbers can be divided by two.”
Liczby parzyste dzielą się przez dwa.
That’s true. And even if you look at the word parzyste, you may know para, which means a pair. This means that you can divide them into two, parzyste.
6. Nieparzyste “odd”
Odd numbers. So this one, we will say in Polish, nieparzyste written together even though nie- is the one, the negation. You usually don’t write it together with the word but with adjectives, you do. So parzyste, nieparzyste.
“Odd numbers.” Liczby nieparzyste. Remember? Number, Liczby. Liczby nieparzyste.
For example, Liczby nieparzyste nie dzielą się przez dwa bez reszty.
“Odd numbers cannot be divided by two without a remainder.” And remainder in Polish is reszty. So the same as change, you know. Small money you are getting when you pay, remainder.
So for example, “Five divided by two is two and remainder one.”
Pięć podzielone przez dwa daje dwa, reszty jeden.
7. Liczyć “to calculate”
Next important word is “to calculate.” In Polish, we say Liczyć. Remember what was number in Polish? Liczby. It is connected. So, the noun Liczby and the verb Liczyć, “to calculate.”
For example, you can say, Wiesz jak obliczyć pole trójkąta? “Do you know how to calculate the area of a triangle?”
Wiesz jak obliczyć pole trójkąta? Wiesz?
8. Plus “plus”
Next one we actually have Polish word that is basically the same as English but different pronunciation. So in English, we say, “plus” In Polish, we say plus. Also can say dodać.
So for example, you can say,
Pięć plus pięć daje dziesięć. Or “Five plus five equals ten.”
Pięć plus pięć daje dziesięć.
And similarly you can use this other word, dodać.
So Pięć dodać pięć daje dziesięć.
9. Minus “minus”
Similarly, to plus, also “minus.” That’s basically the same word. Just a little bit different pronunciation and this is minus. Or a more Polish word is odjąć.
For example, you can say,
Pięć minus pięć daje zero. “Five minus five equals zero.”
Or, pięć odjąć pięć daje zero.
10. Razy “times”
So we’ve got plus, we’ve got minus. We need “times” and “times” in Polish, it’s Razy.
So, for example, you can say and let’s go with an easy one.
Pięć razy pięć daje dwadzieścia pięć. “Five times five equals twenty-five.”
Pięć razy pięć daje dwadzieścia pięć.
That’s all for today. Thank you for listening. Today, we learned 10 Must Know Math Words.
