POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Marzena, what’s the most popular lottery in Poland?
Marzena: It’s LOTTO, and it used to be called Toto-Lotek. It began in Poland in 1957 and to this day tens of thousands of Poles play either regularly or once in a while.
Eric: Is LOTTO just one certain lottery?
Marzena: Actually there are a few different lotteries under the banner of LOTTO.
Eric: Which one is the most popular?
Marzena: The most popular is choosing 6 numbers from 1 to 49. You can choose them yourself or choose an option called na chybił trafił, where the numbers are automatically chosen for you by the machine used for selling the lottery tickets.
Eric: Where can you buy lottery tickets?
Marzena: You can get the tickets in countless places, like kiosks, supermarkets, gas stations, convenience stores, and any place that has a LOTTO logo in the window. After you get a ticket, you need to check the lottery results either on the website or watch it live on TV.
Eric: I see.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eric: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Marzena: los
Eric: This is a masculine noun that means “lot, lottery ticket,” or “fate.” Let's see some sentences with each of the meanings.
Marzena: Sure. Śledzę losy bohaterów tego serialu.
Eric: which means “I follow the fate of this TV show characters.”
Marzena: Kupiłeś już los na loterię?
Eric: “Have you bought a lottery ticket yet?”
Marzena: Nie zasłużyłem na taki los
Eric: “I didn't deserve such a fate.” Okay, what's the next phrase?
Marzena: mieć szczęście
Eric: which means “to have luck” or “to be lucky.”
Marzena: It's formed using the verb mieć, which means “to have” and the neuter noun szczęście, meaning in this case “luck” and “happiness.”
Eric: It can stand alone, or be used as a reaction to something that has happened.
Marzena: If it’s a reaction, you need to use the past tense. “I was lucky” would be miałem szczęście if a male is speaking or miałam szczęście if it’s a female speaking.
Eric: There is also a common phrase…
Marzena: mieć szczęście w, meaning “to be lucky with.”
Eric: For example, you can say…
Marzena: Mam szczęście w loteriach.
Eric: “I'm lucky with lotteries”
Marzena: Mieć szczęście w miłości
Eric: “to be lucky in love”
Marzena: Kto nie ma szczęścia w kartach, ma szczęście w miłości.
Eric: “Who is unlucky in cards is lucky in love.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use big numbers in context. Knowing big numbers in a foreign language is as important as knowing the smaller numbers. You will need them, especially when you’re talking about prices or giving the year. Also all kinds of statistics make use of big numbers.
Marzena: In Polish, big numbers are made up of two parts- the smaller number, for example pięć meaning “five” or siedem meaning “seven,” and the ending - set, which means “hundred.”
Eric: The only special ones, which you will have to memorize, are...
Marzena: sto meaning “one hundred” and dwieście, “two hundred.”
Eric: Also “three hundred” and “four hundred” have different endings than the rest of the numerals.
Marzena: Right. And that’s -sta.
Eric: Ok, let’s count in Polish from 100 to 900. Marzena will say the Polish, and I’ll give the English translation.
Marzena: Let’s get started. sto

Eric: 900. The next set of numbers is the thousands.
Marzena: It gets even easier here, because you just add one of the two forms of the word tysiąc, meaning ”thousand.” For two, three and four thousands please add tysiące and for other numbers, tysięcy
Eric: Ok, let’s count in Polish from 1000 to 9000.
Marzena: Sure. tysiąc
