INTRODUCTION
Betsey: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Polish learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Betsey: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question Do you speak Polish? In Polish this is
Joanna: Czy mówisz po polsku?
Betsey: The first word in the question is
Joanna: czy
Betsey: which is “a question marker.”
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) czy
Betsey: Listen again and repeat.
Joanna: czy
{Pause}
Betsey: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Joanna: mówisz
Betsey: meaning you speak.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) mówisz
Betsey: Now repeat.
Joanna: mówisz
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Joanna: czy mówisz
{pause}
And next
Joanna: po
Betsey: meaning in.
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) po
Betsey: Now repeat.
Joanna: po
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Joanna: czy mówisz po
{pause}
And next

Betsey:You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “Do you speak Polish?”
Joanna: Tak, trochę mówię.
Betsey: "Yes, I speak a little.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Joanna: (Slow) Tak, trochę mówię.
{pause}
To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Joanna: Nie, nie mówię.
Betsey: Which is like saying “No, I don't speak Polish.” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Joanna: (Slowly) Nie, nie mówię.
Betsey: And one more time at normal speed:
Joanna: Nie, nie mówię.
Betsey: Now let's break down our original response from the beginning. The first word:
Joanna: tak
Betsey: meaning “yes.”
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) tak
Betsey: Now repeat
Joanna: tak
{Pause}
Betsey: And after that
Joanna: trochę
meaning “a little.”
Joanna: (Slow, by syllable) trochę
Betsey:Now repeat.
Joanna: trochę
{Pause}
Betsey: And next
Joanna: mówię
meaning “I speak.”

Joanna: mówię
{Pause}
Betsey: Listen to the speaker say, “Yes, I speak a little.”, and then repeat.
Joanna: Tak, trochę mówię.

Betsey: To expand on the pattern, replace “a little” with “well.”
Joanna: dobrze
Betsey: well
Joanna: (slow) dobrze (regular) dobrze
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “well”
Joanna: Tak, dobrze mówię.
Betsey: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “a little.” Say “Yes, I speak well.”

Betsey: To expand on the pattern, replace “fluently” with “but not very well”.
Joanna: ale niezbyt dobrze
Betsey: but not very well
Joanna: (slow) ale niezbyt dobrze (regular) ale niezbyt dobrze
Betsey: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “but not very well”
